The Hunted of 2060 Reviewed!

Complex-light: A review of Ami Blackwelder’s The Hunted of 2060

Perhaps an allegory for the “monster inside all of us” is something that should be embraced rather than feared. Indeed the “monster” manifests itself in many ways in Hunted 2060, in the main character April’s ability to change into a beast, and the militia’s actions in seeking out and exterminating the Shapeshifters. Initially something that is feared, the beast soon is shown to be something of beauty and grace. In April’s eyes, the beast that she can become is an avenue of acceptance that she seems unable to find in any conventional ways.
Initially, I thought that the futuristic technological horizon of Hunted 2060 was a means of showing a yearning to return to simpler times. This seems to be accentuated by the April’s interest in Old English Stories.  Sometimes, though, the involvement of the technology was distracting and slightly confusing. Indeed, it sometimes felt out of place when the characters used their hologram watches or any of their other advanced tools.
This is really a minor issue in the context of the whole work. Hunted 2060 explores the complexity of a young woman trying to find some kind of acceptance. Rather, it points to the need in all of us to do the same. Even though this subject could be heavy, Ami Rebecca Blackwelder handles it gracefully and with more than just a little lightheartedness.
The action in Hunted begins almost immediately and doesn’t let up until the last few pages of the work where we find an interesting story of redemption for one character and the anticipation for a new beginning for others. Ranging in themes from familial betrayal to the needs to belong, the relationships in Hunted feel natural and even familiar. Even the stress relationship between April, her sister, and her mother – and believe me, it’s stressed – doesn’t feel forced. Overall, Hunted 2060 is a good read for anyone who is looking for a recreational read that actually has some depth to it, but doesn’t feel too heavy handed.

The Imaginarium of Ami Blackwelder

I have such a fascinating VBT guest today. Ami Blackwelder is an author whose wide ranging interests take her from one end of the imaginative scale to the other. While many authors would like to expand their skills with a couple of different forays into genres, Ami seems to glide effortlessly into a variety of genres. Author of Rain: Graphic NovellaGuardians of the GateThe Day the Flowers Died, and The Hunted of 2060.

Tell us about yourself, Ami:

I was raised in California and then in the third grade moved to Florida. I attended the University of Central Florida where I received my BA in English creative writing and teaching. After college, I did a lot of traveling as a teacher to countries like China, Tibet, Nepal, Korea and Thailand! I’ve always loved storytelling. As early as Elementary school, I wrote long inventive tales which my teachers would read in front of class. I took it more seriously as I grew older. I wrote primarily poetry and short stories in my twenties, but in my thirties I have written spiritual books as well as novels. I write paranormal and historical romance which focuses on the forbidden love aspects of characters because of culture, religion, time, gender, death, and species differences.

Ami, reading over your list of publications, I am astounded at the range and variety. What a range—from Christian topics and the bible (Genesis) to a graphic novella, to Munich in 1930, to an elfin romance, to the year 2060! Quite a variety of topics and you obviously have an incredible imagination.

Please tell us how you were inspired for each of your books, what you brought to bear from either your travels, education or research in creating each of your works, and where you see yourself settling comfortably in a genre, or will you continue to be a gipsy wordsmith.

I graduated from UCF with an BA in English and teaching credentials. I traveled to Asia for eight years, teaching primarily kindergarten and writing. I began my writing career with short stories and poetry in my twenties, winning Best Fiction awards and publications in magazines and newspapers in Korea and Thailand.

In my early thirties, I delved into religious topics such as The Ancient Genesis (Creation and Evolution debate) and re-educated myself about Christian issues in Christianity and Sensibility. My overseas adventures helped to inspire my book The Other Five Senses which also incorporates Eastern religions.

But by my mid-thirties I discovered my passion for creative writing was not content to live as mere short stories and I began my journey. I now define myself as a paranormal and historical romance writer. I enjoy the science fiction and fantasy aspects of my imagination as well as entering a past time that I find intriguing. Romance is usually central to my writing, but not the sappy, cliché, or erotic kind of romance. My writing is tasteful with a twist.

Readers will be engaged, entertained, and sometimes enraged with my novels. Currently I am switching publishing companies from 'Creative Endeavors' to 'Eloquent Enraptures.' My books are being re-edited and re-designed with covers and being re-submitted to online and offline venues. The Hunted of 2060 and The Day the Flowers Died are both complete with the transition. My other works will soon follow.

I will be having my first book signing shortly for The Hunted of 2060, my latest work. I am currently working on the prequel, The shifter of 2040, which fans of that novel will love to hear! It is a new book, but has already caught a lot of buzz. Inspired by metamorphosis, wildlife conservation, and prejudice, this novel is a teaching tool within the framework of original, and intriguing shorelines.

Let's take a look at Ami's latest book: The Hunted of 2060
America 2060.
Three Lovers. Two Species. One Way to Survive.
Set in Alaska in 2060, when April enters her Sophomore year at University, she thought Robert might be the love of her life, but as she discovers, she is hiding something inside her, something the rest of the world believes to have died out. She struggles with who she was and who she is becoming as she learns of a family she never knew existed and of enemies she will have to outrun, outfight or outwit to survive. As April embraces her new identity, will she have to leave the life she loves behind? With underlining themes of how prejudice breaks human connections and animal/wildlife conservation, this novel which has received rave reviews will leave the reader flipping through the pages of April’s story.

Fan Letter for The Hunted of 2060-

Michelle said to you:
Hi Ami,

I have just started 'The Hunted of 2060'and am enjoying the fast paced read. I like to 'see'books as I read them . Some authors are very very good at it. I am loving seeing your characters and the scenery. I love that April has a guardian in Diamond. I can't wait for the hunt to no doubt begin on this clan. I noticed how you used Aprils name as being very human name and the other creatures having more interesting names to suit their characters and non human. I like Robert I hope he is good for her..time will tell.

My Review

April was one of the strongest herione's I have read. You could feel her struggle between to worlds. Not only being with a hybrid. She also struggled with making the right choice in relationships. I have to admit I love Arken's character better than good old Rogers. There was so much happening in The Hunted of 2060 but you never felt overwhelmed or that you couldn't keep up with the plot. The setting placed in the future, was something you could believe. The way Human's treated aliens seems real, and likely to happen. I could see The Hunted of 2060 hitting the big screen. This was the first book of Ami's I have read. I will continue to look for Ami Blackwelder's books in the future.

This book was sent to me from Ami. In no way did this influence my review. All reviews are honest and true to my own opinions.

The Hunted of 2060 REVIEWED!

~The Hunted of 2060~, May 15, 2010
By Natasha Brooks
From Bare Back Magazine

www.barebackmagazine.com/blog

This review is from: The Hunted of 2060 (Volume 1) (Paperback)
The Hunted 2060 is an awesome sci-fi thriller about the future. The author takes the reader on a very exciting trip into a future society set in Alaska in the year 2060 - into a future that is not like our own. The first chapter delivers a cleverly written description of the main character and the plight that the protagonist must face.

19-year old college student - April dealt with the changes that controlled her body and her urges. Adopted at birth, her true identity was never told to her until she had a chance meeting with her siblings and was told the truth about her past. She was then introduced into a world that was unknown yet very familiar to her. She fought against the beast within her as she continued to control her body from changing form as well as her urges throughout the story. April continued to attempt to maintain a normal life while continuing to attend college.

April adjusted to her new reality of becoming who she was to become - one of "the hunted." Half human and half wolf-like species, April was introduced to the "clan" and learned about her family and their supernatural/alien connection called shifters that can change into different forms on earth and read minds of humans.

It was intriguing to learn more about the future society, the storyline and, the characters as the story progress throughout the book. The story was filled with several twists and turns that seemed well thought out.

The characters were believable and interesting. The author took her time in revealing the plot. I was impressed with the amount of imagination used to describe the story line, the characters and the surroundings. All of the details of the future society were woven in a well written manner. Just imagine a futurist novel with sky cars, hologram textbooks and robots to name a few coupled with a supernatural species of beings with supernatural abilities and supernatural twists that are very well put together.

I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in reading a good sci-fi book.

The Hunted of 2060 Reviewed by BookTaste!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Hunted of 2060 by Ami Blackwelder.
Createspace Publishing. www.amiblackwelder.blogspot.com
There’s a beast in all of us!
SWEET young love and hey nonny-nonny ─ it’s the Shakespeare touch, but . . . Like the bard of old, author Blackwelder ambushes romance with dark pit-traps. She’s good at this and easy to read, because her fantasy hangs close to our real world.
In The Hunted of 2060, as in her other books, she makes weird events totally credible. I’d say she can claim as her own a new genre, Reality Fantasy. Or you can read this as an allegory, set in Alaska, on our changing world. Mostly, however, it is a rattling good story about a lovable girl called April who is not quite human.
She doesn’t know it to begin with, and her guy is normal. This is a good original take on forbidden love. It’s Planet Earth in 2060 complete with hover trains, skycars, robot waiters and hologram books. We have defeated an Alien invasion, yet traces remain of a strange species whose DNA can blend to the form of any earthly creature.
The Hunted of the title are hybrid aliens, resulting from mixed mating with humans. There is a hit squad seeking them out and exterminating them. To her horror, April discovers she is one of these halfcastes, with peculiar relatives. I won’t spoil the story by divulging more, but think polarbear, deer, bird, wolf. Such a family menagerie may seem a bit daft, but Ami Blackwelder’s controlled skill carries this plot convincingly.
Could be movie material too. ─ Cathy Macleod, April 2010.
